ASTORIA - MisaTango by MartÍn Palmeri

Length: 0:36:14

In 2020, ASTORIA celebrated its 15th anniversary with a recording of MisaTango by Argentine composer Martín Palmeri: a bold fusion of sacred music and tango that immerses you in a world of intense emotions, passion, and syncopated rhythms. MisaTango, or Misa a Buenos Aires ("Mass in Buenos Aires"), was initially relatively unknown but gained significant recognition when it was performed in October 2013 in the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola in Rome, during the International Festival of Sacred Music and Art in the Vatican. That year, MisaTango was chosen to honor the inauguration of the former Cardinal of Buenos Aires, who became Pope Francis in 2013—an homage to the Argentine roots of the former tango dancer.

Created 20 years ago by Argentine composer Martín Palmeri, MisaTango is a choral mass set to tango music. It is composed following the traditional movements of a Latin Mass, blending the harmonies and syncopated rhythms of tango. ASTORIA’s arrangement brings fresh energy to MisaTango, with the presence of the accordion, of course, but also with the distinctive voice of Jennifer Scavuzzo.

Recorded in February 2020 at AMUZ, Antwerp.
