Les Diners de Gala - a concert film by Tsar B

"Last year made us freak out. But also rethink what we want to be and where we want to be. Last year made me pick up my violin more often again, together with my childish love for Mozart. I came up with the idea to shoot a concert film that made me honour my heroes. A piece in between movies and music, the fantasy of Fellini combined with the lawlessness of Dali. We shot a 20 minute concert film in the old palace of Arnold Vander Haeghen in Ghent, Belgium. It’s a liveshow where we (trui on cellos & me on violin) show you our art and a new show we created in these weird times. Being able to make this kind of work in the middle of a pandemic fills me up with so much hope and warmth and I hope you can watch this movie and let it heat you up too. Collegium Vocale Gent - Bach's early Leipzig Cantatas - Schauet doch und sehet

Schauet doch und sehet - J.S. Bach’s early Leipzig Cantatas When Bach took up his position as cantor at the Thomas School in Leipzig in 1723, he was also given responsibility for the musical life in the city's four main churches. With about fifty singers divided into three choirs, a few organists and an orchestra of students and city musicians, he served the faithful congregation on all Sundays and holidays for a quarter of a century with music: motets, chorales, organ works and hundreds of cantatas. From this musical treasure trove, Philippe Herreweghe has selected three magnificent cantatas from Bach's early years in Leipzig. Each one is a musical masterpiece that testifies to his unfailing sense of dramaturgy, variety and profound text expression. Clérambault: du péché à l'adoration - a nocte temporis & Reinoud Van Mechelen

Reinoud Van Mechelen and his ensemble a nocte temporis have become firm favourites with the BOZAR audience. Having focused on Charpentier, Bach and Irish folk music in recent years, they turn their attention this season to Nicolas Clérambault. The works of this French baroque composer may not be as popular as those of his contemporaries Lully and Rameau, but certainly deserve to stand alongside them, as demonstrated on Van Mechelen's intimate album Cantates françaises. The much-praised Belgian tenor furthers his discovery of Clérambault through several large-scale works, including the Te Deum and the oratorio La femme adultère. The project is a first collaboration with the prestigious Chœur de Chambre de Namur.

Music Chapel Festival - Beyond Beethoven

'𝑳𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒅𝒊𝒆' This motto, made famous by the Jacobins, could also be used to describe the character of Coriolanus and that of Beethoven. For the Roman hero and the composer were equally complex, beings between virtue and pride, freedom and misanthropy – to an extent that was incomprehensible to their contemporaries. Another, more reflective facet of Beethoven emerges in his Romance in F major , with its lyrical and dramatic outbursts. The intimate spirit of this rondo contrasts with the symphonic character of the Triple Concerto, a work at the crossroads of the trio, concerto grosso and solo concerto. Two Places - Brussels Jazz Orchestra

February 1 2020 - Magdalenazaal Brugge Two Places takes you on an amazing journey, past the orchestral sound of Brussels Jazz Orchestra, the rhymes of Zediam, the soul of singer Monique Harcum and the mixing, scratching and sampling skills of DJ Grazzhoppa. This production tears down musical pigeonholes and creates new places: Two Places, at once. Brussels Jazz Orchestra looks the innovative powers of jazz right in the eyes, and does so in good company “Two Places is a unique project. It combines the glorious sound of the orchestra with my voice, Zediam’s rhymes and DJ Grazzhoppa’s turntablism. It’s got jazz and soul and funk. It’s a cocktail you wouldn’t expect to taste as good as it does.” – Monique Harcum. In late January 2020 Two Places had its baptism by fire in the Concertstudio in Kortrijk (BE). An audience of young hip-hop fans, soul lovers and veteran jazz cats welcomed the project with swingin’ hips and groovy applause. All the genres in Two Places have their roots in jazz. Shortly after the birth of hip-hop, performers started sampling jazz recordings, making the BJO sound also recognisable for fans of other genres as well. Besides stars like rap talent Zediam, singer Monique Harcum and hip-hop god DJ Grazzhoppa, BJO also has fine company in Erik Rademakers (Selah Sue) on electric bass and David Thomaere (The Voice, Netsky, Laura Tesoro) on keyboards. In Two Places, the typical BJO idiom is continually evolving into another sound, without these transitions being shocking. It’s a unique and many-sided trip to some new musical places.

Beethoven in Pocketsize - Symphony No. 9 by soloists from the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides

Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no. 9 in d minor - 'Ode an die Freude' in an arrangement for wind ensemble from Alessandro Bombonati Gent Festival van Vlaanderen invited all the large Belgian orchestras to perform all nine symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven at the Festival with an adapted line-up. With his ninth symphony, after all the innovations that he had introduced the indefatigable Beethoven once again succeeds in injecting a revolutionary twist into musical history. Beethoven in Pocketsize - Symphony No. 8 by Belgian National Orchestra

Gent Festival van Vlaanderen invited all the large Belgian orchestras to perform all nine symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven at the Festival with an adapted line-up. With his Eighth Symphony, after the violence of numbers three to seven Beethoven seems to briefly turn back to the enlightened eighteenth century, as if he wished to linger for a while in the musical landscape in which he grew up before his groundbreaking final contribution to the genre. In this series, the extremely charming work is performed by musicians from the Belgian National Orchestra in an anonymous arrangement for string quartet. PROGRAM Ludwig van Beethoven – String quintet in C Major: part 3 and 4 Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no. 8 in F Major (arr. for quintet) PERFORMERS Alexei Moshkov, violin Filip Suys, violin Dmitri Ryabinin, viola Mihoko Kusama, viola Olsi Leka, cello

Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no. 7 in A Major (arr. J. Reyes for nonet) Gent Festival van Vlaanderen invited all the large Belgian orchestras to perform all nine symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven at the Festival with an adapted line-up. The exuberant seventh symphony – described by Richard Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’ – is performed by members of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen Symphonic Orchestra. This is a sparkling version for nonet arranged by their own double bassist José Andrés Reyes. At the premiere of the work, in 1813, the second part (Allegretto) was so popular that it had to be repeated. It has also been used in numerous films, including recently in The King’s Speech. PERFORMERS Melanie Roosken | flute Arie van der Beek | oboe Fang Song | klarinet Rémy Roux | bassoon Bart Cypers | horn Maximilian Lohse | violin Beatrice Derolez | viola Jadranka Gasparovic | cello José Reyes | double bass

Beethoven in Pocketsize - Symphony No. 5 by soloists of La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra

Gent Festival van Vlaanderen invited all the large Belgian orchestras to perform all nine symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven at the Festival with an adapted line-up. Five string players from La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra take on the imposing and iconic fifth symphony. They play this majestic ‘symphony of symphonies’ in an arrangement by Carl Friedrich Ebers, an exact contemporary of Beethoven. He arranged the symphony for string quintet three years after the composer’s death. This ‘reduction’ does even more justice to the ingenious structure of the work, which unfolds from the four notes of the famous opening motif, than in the original! PROGRAM Ludwig van Beethoven – From String quintet in C Major: part 2, Adagio molto espressivo Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no. 5 in c Minor (arr. C.F. Ebers for quintet) PERFORMERS Saténik Khourdoian, violin Noémie Tiercet, violin Yves Cortvrint, viola Florent Brémond, viola Sébastien Walnier, cello

Beethoven in Pocketsize - Symphony No. 4 by soloists of Orchestre Philharmonic Royal de Liège

Gent Festival van Vlaanderen invited all the large Belgian orchestras to perform all nine symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven at the Festival with an adapted line-up. Beethoven’s fourth symphony was described by Schumann as ‘the slim Greek maiden between two northern giants’, referring to the monumental third and fifth symphonies. In this cycle, the work is performed by members of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège. They perform the transcription for septet by William Watts, violist and secretary of London’s Royal Philharmonic Society. PROGRAM Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no. 4 in B flat Major (arr. W. Watts for septet) PERFORMERS Lieve Goossens, flute Alberto Menchen, violin Virginie Petit, violin Ralph Szigeti, viola Violaine Miller, viola Paul Stavridis, cello Simon Verschraege, double bass

Beethoven in Pocketsize - Symphony No. 3 'Eroica' by soloists of Casco Phil

With the Third Symphony, the ‘Eroica’, we resolutely turn our backs on the classical eighteenth-century world of Haydn and Mozart. The length of the symphony alone is a sign that we are dealing with something new. Belgium’s adventurous chamber orchestra Casco Phil performs a nonet version, with four strings and five wind instruments, composed by Carl Friedrich Ebers.

Beethoven in Pocketsize - Symphony No. 2 by soloists of Anima Eterna Brugge

Gent Festival van Vlaanderen invited all the large Belgian orchestras to perform all nine symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven at the Festival with an adapted line-up. For the second symphony, numbers are reduced to the favourite line-up of the piano trio. None other than Jos van Immerseel takes his place behind the pianoforte. Accompanied by Midori Seiler on violin and Mercedes Ruiz on cello, he flies the flag for Anima Eterna, the orchestra that has performed the nine symphonies in full numerous times, and which is unparalleled in the mastery of their specific idiom and the corresponding instrumentation. The arrangement that they play was created shortly after the symphony was composed, and according to the title page is by the author himself. This was probably a sales trick, because there are indications that Beethoven’s pupil Ferdinand Ries was responsible for the lion’s share of the work, and that Beethoven only supplied the finishing touches.
